Fandom Year in Review

Your main fandom this year?
This has been kind of a wild year for me fandom wise, I got into four new fandoms this year! The big ones are Doctor Who and Dead Boy Detectives, Doctor Who really sucked me in, to the point that I was listening to Big Finish stuff and reading tie-in novels, and I don't think I'm done with Who, just taking a break for a bit. Dead Boy Detectives I loved with my whole heart, and I'm still sad it won't be getting a second season. I dipped into Ghosts (US version) for a bit, it is very fun and chill. And lastly, I have spent the holidays watching the Granada Sherlock Holmes series, and I love it so much. I think teenage me would be so happy, because I read so many of the Sherlock Holmes stories as a teen and loved them, and it has been long enough now that I don't remember a lot of the details of the mysteries, so the stories are fresh again.
Your favourite movie watched this year?
I haven't watched a lot of movies this year, much more TV shows, but I did watch a few, and I think my favourite was probably Barbie, which I finally got around to watching in the Summer. It was very sweet and I thought had a really good message.
Your favourite book read this year?
I'm going to say a non-fiction book, The Wager by David Grann. It's not an easy read by any stretch of the imagination, the whole section about the scurvy outbreak was stomach churning, but if you are curious about the Age of Sail and what surviving a real shipwreck would be like, it's a great read.
Your favourite TV show of the year?
I'm going to pick two. Dead Boy Detectives, it's supernatural, fun and with a little teen angst, but also some great messages. Like I swear if this had come out like even 5 years ago it could have had several seasons on a network like the CW. Secondly, is Star Trek: Lower Decks, I'm sad this was the last season for Lower Decks, even though I do think it had a pretty good ending. Lower Decks when it was coming out always made me smile, and gave me something to look forward to each week (also I ship Tendi/T'Lyn or Tendi/T'Lyn/Mariner now).
Your favourite video game of the year?
N/A. I rarely play video games.
Your favourite song, album, or artist to listen to this year?
Well according to my Spotify wrapped, it was Chappel Roan. I discovered her just before she blew up, through Dead Boy Detectives playlists (ha), and I felt so hipster and in the know when she became popular, like I knew her before she was big.
Favourite podcast of the year
Sherlock & Co. (again with the Sherlock Holmes!), I love this modern twist on the Holmes stories, with Watson as a podcaster who is documenting Sherlock's cases as a consulting detective.
Secondly is probably This Week In Fandom History, it's fun hearing them discuss fandom events each week and I always laugh when they discover something unexpected has a fandom.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Dead Boy Detectives, but I've already gushed about it enough.
Your biggest fandom disappointment?
Dead Boy Detectives being cancelled after one season, and the announcement that they will be wrapping up Good Omens with a 90 minute movie (sigh).
Your TV boyfriend of the year?
I don't know maybe Edwin Payne, or Sherlock Holmes, I do seem to like my cerebral, repressed Victorians. (Although, really John Watson is my boy)
Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Tendi from Lower Decks, or maybe Hetty from Ghosts.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
The staircase scene in Dead Boy Detectives. Also, loved the Lower Decks episode where Tendi, T'Lyn and Mariner get stuck on a planet together for months (I think it was probably the best episode of the season).
Fandom resolutions for next year?
None, other than probably modding fandom trees again, other than that we'll see where the year takes me.
Your biggest fannish anticipations for the new year?
I don't know, watching the rest of the Granada Sherlock Holmes series, and eventually finishing the 13th Doctor's run.

I watched The Empty House a few days ago, and I swear I've watched the scene where Watson finds out Holmes is alive at least a half dozen times since. So much Holmes/Watson angst! But also joy as well.
(Also, I love your icon!)

Similar with Shadow & Bone - I heard the quality wasn't as good in S2 but couldn't they have at least finished the show with a 3rd season? It might not draw in more new viewers but it might also not anger many of your current ones...
I think I didn't even watch a single TV show last year? I really can't remember any... 🙈

That's why I started watching Ghosts, because it already had three seasons with lots of episodes. I've also been watching older shows lately, because I know ITV isn't going to come out of the 1980s and steal the Sherlock Holmes series from me.

I've had it happen several times that I thought, "Oh that sounds interesting" and then it got cancelled immediately, so I don't even try it. Especially because the shows often end on cliffhangers or have lots of open plot threads dangling... That's why I'm glad that Good Omens at least is getting a movie to wrap it all up; I wasn't big into the fandom-side of it but I'm always glad when a show at least gets and ending, and hopefully a satisfying one (and tbh S2 was what felt at least 70% fanservice filler to me, so.... XD).
The one I'm quite secure about is Netflix's One Piece because it seems they managed to do everything right for once to get a good show out of an anime. I loved that first season and even if they at some point might cancel the show, One Piece has closed arcs, and it seems that the showrunners want to get through an arc (or half of one) in a season, so it would at least in a good way. With how S1 was received, i don't see them cancelling it any time soo, though. And for us Germans, they even had an extra treat because the voice actors came from the anime, so it was super easy to get into the show. I felt right at home! XD
