My Year in Books 2019
This year was a big reading year for me, according to Goodreads I read 74 books this year, which is up from previous years, where I usually read on average 55 books. Although, I do know a few were rereads, because I was clearing out my bookshelves and I reread some books to help me decide whether or not they would stay or go. As a result of my clear out I found out that there is a Free Little Library in the city near me, so when I was donating books I would pick up new ones, because they were free I would often pick up things I wouldn't normally give a chance.
The big motivator for me this year was doing the LiveJournal Book Bingo, you can see my card here, as you can see I didn't black out my card, but I came close. I started reading Dracula at the beginning of October to fill the horror square, but then I got sick, and by the time I got well October was over and I wasn't in the mood for that type of book any longer, I will probably pick it back up in the future, maybe next autumn. The great thing about doing the bingo challenge was it forced me to try new genres, and pushed me out of my comfort zone a little bit.
I discovered a love for comics and graphic novels, I'm not sure why I never really got into them when I was younger, because I loved the animated superhero shows, but I think it was because my local library didn't really have any in their collection and the closest comic book store was in a nearby city, and that place always looked a little strange and filled with unfriendly boys, plus I didn't have a lot in the way of spending money. Anyways, I picked up my first one for the bingo challenge and fell in love. And, thank goodness, my local library is a lot more up to date and has an entire section of graphic novels now.
My Favourite Comics/Graphic Novels:
*Hawkeye Comics - the Matt Fraction run and the Kelly Thompson series that focused on Kate Bishop (it was a Kate Bishop comic that made me fall in love)
*Unbelievable Gwenpool - the whole run by Christopher Hastings (but I was little disappointed in the ending)
*Lake of Fire by Nathan Fairbairn
*Pumpkinsheads by Rainbow Rowell
I also discovered Star Trek novels, especially from the original series, I've only read a few so far, but I've been loving them. They are a little harder to get a hold of, my library has hardly any in their collection, so it is a little more work to find used or discounted copies. Although, I did luck out and find a TNG book, Exiles, in my Free Little Library, so I'm looking forward to reading it in the new year.
My Favourite Star Trek Novels:
*Dreams of the Raven by Carmen Carter
*Doctor's Orders by Diane Duane
I read a few dystopian books this year, I try to spread those out over the year, because they can be a little depressing sometimes. My two favourites had completely different tones, one was very bleak and hopeless, while the other had a much more hopeful outlook for humanity.
My Favourite Dystopian Novels:
*On The Beach by Nevil Shute
*Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
My comfort food in book form is still Historical Romance, they are the books I turn to when I need a break from some of the heavier stuff I'm reading, or I just need a pick me up.
My Favourite Historical Romance Novels:
*Pendragon Rises by Tracy Cooper-Posey
*Lady Saves The Duke by Annabelle Anders
And finally, a couple of books that I loved that didn't fit in other categories
My Overall Favourites:
*The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
*Bear Town by Fredrik Backman

Anyways, feel free to use last year's card, here is the original card if you want to use it for your journal, some of the spaces can be a challenge, especially a book with six words in the title, I looked a long time to fill that one, most titles seem to have max of five words.
Happy reading!
