The Last Three Star Trek TOS Films
So, I finally got around to watching the last three films with the original cast, and I got to say I love them. I still think The Search For Spock is still my favourite out of all six films, but I found myself really enjoying these ones.
The Voyage Home, I saw many times growing up, it seemed to be on TV quite a bit back in the day, it is still delightful, seeing the team in 1990s America and them being so baffled by things is always funny. I loved Scotty and Bones' chaotic energy here, Bones is like "Should we be worried about messing up the timeline?" and Scotty's like "Nah". We didn't get enough Bones & Scotty team ups. Also, Chekov was hilarious in this film running around the navy ship. I hadn't watched the whole thing in years, I remembered them going back in time to save the whales pretty clearly, but I had forgotten all about their time on Vulcan at the beginning of the film and the court marshal at the end.

The Final Frontier, I had seen part of this film before, but not the whole thing. I know this is a lot of people's least favourite film, and I can understand why to an extent, the narrative isn't as smooth and it felt a little broken up, and Kirk was very Snippy with Spock in this. However, there are still some wonderful character moments in this movie. I loved that Spock tells Sybok that he is not the outcast boy he left behind, and that he has finally found his place in the universe, it was so wonderful to hear that Spock finally felt like he had found what he been looking for. The Bones backstory was really tragic, but added so much depth to his character, and explained so much about him. I really wish we had gotten to see all the terrible memories of the crew, like Sulu, Uhura and Chekov, I know that it probably would have taken too much time, but I still want to know dammit! Also, I think the hints of a Scotty/Uhura romance were cute, even if we only see it for a few minutes, I think it's sweet that two old friends decide to try a relationship. Oh, and we also got the classic line "Please Captain, not in front of the Klingons" when Kirk goes to hug Spock, I had seen that meme many times before, but had no idea where it came from. Overall, I think that I liked the first part of the film better than the second with the God like creature, but still a fun movie.
The Undiscovered Country, I had never seen this one at all before. I love that they brought back Kirk's feelings about David's death at the hands of the Klingons, like you just don't get over something like that, and it was also a nice way to connect the previous films to this one. Poor Bones gets thrown under the bus by the Klingons for being an old drunk doctor, which was totally undeserved. This film has some great Kirk & Bones content, they even shoot the one scene to make it look like they're in bed together, they're not, it's two different bunks, but still. I loved Bones saying, after the alien woman kissed Kirk, "what is it with you?". I figured out who the saboteur was before it was revealed, but it was still a interesting storyline, although Spock mindraping Valeris, was slightly disturbing. Side note, I also think this is the first time we meet a Vulcan character with a name that doesn't start with a T or an S. This one didn't have as much chance for character moments, but I still really enjoyed it. Overall, I think it was a great ending for the original characters, Sulu gets his own ship and everyone else has one last three month voyage before retirement.

I wish they had just left it at that, like I hated some of the endings the original characters get later on in the Trek universe, Kirk gets sucked into some space thingamajig and gets pulled in the 24th century where he dies, Spock gets stuck and dies in an alternative reality, Scotty ends up stuck permanently in the 24th century alone. All of these are terrible endings for these characters, at least in my opinion. The only ones we kind of know that have a good ending are Bones, who lives to be a ridiculously old age for a human, and is a respected doctor and teacher at Starfleet medical, I think it is mentioned that Uhura teaches at the academy as well, Sulu is a captain for a quite awhile, and I don't think we know much about Chekov accept that he retires, I think it is assumed that they all have long and happy lives. I think if I want to remember an ending for the TOS crew I want to think about The Undiscovered Country, that was a decent ending for all of them.

And it feels... right.

I think the cameo by Bones in TNG is a good one it makes the audience feel good becasue we know that he is still alive, being a 137 at the time, and we know he is a well respected doctor and teacher at Starfleet Medical.
It has been a long time since I watched the TNG episodes featuring Spock. It makes sense to have his character there, becasue he is a federation ambassador and Vulcans live to be so much older, although I do remember thinking that it seemed strange seeing him without any of the other TOS characters. I will say if they had just left it at that, with we as the audience thinking that Spock had a long and successful second career as an ambassdor, I think a lot of us would have be happy, but alas that is not what happened. Last time I talked about Star Trek here, someone commented that in one of the book series Spock has a long career as an ambassdor, and when he becomes very old he retires, and eventually dies, on Vulcan where is treated as a respected elder, which I think is a fitting end for him, and one I prefer.

Haha, I love ST5 and am not ashamed. (I should probably do a rewatch and make sure that’s still true!)
Absolutely agree about the character endings.

Some of the character endings disappoint me greatly, but I guess that is what fic is for, to fix those canon missteps.

I don't think I've seen the other two...
