Disney Announcements

Everyone is so excited for all the new films and series Disney just announced, but I have such mixed feelings about Disney in general now.  I grew up with Disney and loved them, and I do think most of the time they are pretty solid at turning out good, great, and sometimes fantastic content, and they are doing a lot more to creative inclusive content and giving different styles of stories a chance.  However, they are feeling more and more like a media monopoly, which I feel can't be good in general, plus some of the stories you hear about how they treat some of their employees is not good, trying to suppress employee actions at Disneyland, not paying writers what they are due, and extending the copyright laws again and again so Micky won't go into the public domain.  But, at the same time I'm kind of excited for the Loki series, sigh, being ethical is hard.

I had VERY mixed feeling about it all. Because, well, Disney. But... Hayden Christiansen coming back for Kenobi is wonderful and.... Patty Jenkins directing Rogue Squadron has had me crying all evening.

I'm currently boycotting Disney so I am pretty dangit because I'm glad a woman is finally getting to solo direct a SW movie but I won't be able to watch it for the forseeable future. But Patty Jenkins!

I know this is hard. I have a special needs brother, who loves Disney, so there is no way we are not going to see whatever the latest movies is in theatres, once the pandemic is over. I don't think he would get what a boycott is for, he just wants to see his favourite characters and cartoons.

I was thinking that you might be able to watch any of the new films through your library, depending on your local library system, but that wouldn't be until after the DVD release, so you'd have to wait awhile. It would be one way for you to watch the film without directly paying Disney (although, I guess some of your tax payer money went into buying the film that multiple people will share)

I probably could watch the films through that, but I don't think I'd be comfortable with it when I'm trying to boycott it. I'm also doing my best to avoid reblogging/boosting the new works through fandom, so it's about more than just the direct dollars. I understand about your brother though; I think if you can avoid supporting them otherwise, it's in the spirit of things.

They know how to get you, and I will admit I was happy for Patty Jenkins, she seems like such a good director, and you hear nothing but good things about her from people who work with her, and this will be great for her career and she was probably well compensated.

Basically, yes. I feel like Disney was coming for me with the combo of Andor and Rogue Squadron but: I'm gonna be strong. We can be strong together!

I'm going to try, but my brother is probably definitely going to watch some of these films, so Disney is still making their money from our household.

Someone on Twitter said it is more of the same. That Disney is one of the few who could actually afford to take risks and instead they grab onto something until they poison our enjoyment. This is what it feels like.

Oh yeah, Disney is not letting any die, and they are still doing the live action remake thing, they announced a live action Pinocchio, and I was just like "why?"

I missed that one... Did...did anybody ask for a live action Pinocchio? Or did they just throw a dart at a list of their animated movies?

Did anybody ask for any of these live-action remakes? I think Disney just knows that people like the original movies, so they're like lets redo them all!

I haven't looked up the announcement yet for similar mixed feelings. This year I got unexpectedly invested in Star Wars again and I do not trust Disney with it at all. They have the money to pay talented creators and actors, but they're extremely heavy-handed at monetizing it.

Yeah, they are going a little crazy with the Star Wars stuff, I'm afraid they are going to make people sick of it. I'm just a casual watcher and I'm already behind, so all these films and TV series are just like too much for me.

Plus, I'm not boycotting Disney, but I am distancing myself from them a little.
