Schmigadoon

I finished Schmigadoon today, and I have to say I found it delightful. It is a parody of musicals, and there are a couple of comedy moments that made me cringe, but overall you got the feeling, that even though the creators are making fun of musicals, they also have a deep love for the genre. Some of the musical numbers where catchy and fun, and I really enjoyed a lot of the characters.

There are rumors of a season 2, I have no idea how they would do it, because this season seemed like such a complete story, but I'd definitely be interested in seeing where it would go.

I enjoyed it in a really superficial way; I don't think I'd come back for S2 because I felt like I didn't get to know any of the townspeople beyond Mayor Menlove, but I also felt like the ending is a cliffhanger to lead into S2. I couldn't tell you what their plan was though!

I can't tell you how many times I laughed out loud when the townsfolk burst into song, though some were more, hm, exact parodies than others. To be fair, though, if you've seen Oklahoma! Carousel, The Music Man and Brigadoon (mostly for the concept), you get most of it.

I'd love to see a second season where they go into a more modern selection of musicals, with attendant realism slightly less unrealism. A Chorus Line, Hair, Godspell and Cabaret, maybe. Or a Sondheim season would be good (potentially hilarious, but perhaps to a more limited audience). I suppose there's no likelihood of a Gilbert & Sullivan season...

Plot, as usual, not that important, and not really the point anyway. Not with Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming on screen!
