Sunshine Challenge Prompt #7

Something you love about yourself

What I love about myself is that I am diligent and responsible, and although I do procrastinate sometimes, if it is very important I tend to get to it as soon as possible.
I won't go into a lot of detail, but my grandmother passed away a few months ago, and dealing with the contents of her home and going through her things has surprisingly fallen almost completely on me. I came to realize that if I hadn't stepped up, the majority of my grandmother's things would still be sitting there, and my mother would be in limbo in regards to my grandmother's home. Other family members have thanked me for my action. Anyways, what I have come understand about myself over the years is once I have established what needs to be done, I get to it. It doesn't always work out, and things go wrong and there are times where I am overwhelmed, but I do what needs to be done.

That's a lovely quality.

I helped with my father's stuff when he died. It was a lot of work.

It's easy to take for granted. One of my biggest let-downs was a friend who promised to help me move, specifically promised she'd bring her father's truck (I hadn't even asked her to, she volunteered and told me not to "waste" money on movers or a U-Haul because she could get her dad's truck for free). And then the night before my move when I was asking how early she could get the truck there, said something vague about her dad being out in the morning doing work with the truck but she could "probably" get it by such-and-such time (hours after we would need to start loading it). Panicked last-minute arrangements for a U-haul and I got it sorted out. To which she said, "Cool. I'll still come by to help move boxes, but I might be late. Oh, and I'll need to leave early because my cousin's baby shower is that day." (?!?!?!) Yeah, guess who never showed up at all. And I think she was even sincere when she first made the promise; she's just a flake who can't be counted on and didn't give any thought to following through (i.e. letting her dad know she'd promised his truck, not scheduling other things the same day, etc).

So, you probably don't get enough credit for stepping up and being responsible. But, man, it's an important quality.

I'm in the waffly in-between. I'm not that great at taking the initiative to step-up, but if I do promise to help I'm not going to weasel out. When my great-aunt died, my mom's sister wanted me to handle cleaning out the house. (My great-aunt was a serious hoarder, so, um, no.) And my solution was to find an estate-sale company that didn't mind dealing with a crazy hoarder house. I felt kind of guilty about it because it seemed the lazy way out, but it worked out great and the family ended up being really happy with my solution.

I don't think I ever got her to understand that I wasn't mad at her for not helping. I was mad at her for making promises she couldn't follow-through on.

It's why I definitely count "responsible" as one of my most-valued quality in a friend. Tell me you can't do something or even don't want to do something and I'm fine. I'm not mad at all. But claim that you will do something and then bail? Argh.

Being a dependable person of action is a great thing, and it’s even better when you can take pride in that fact!

That sounds like a great quality to have, one that's much needed but at the same time so underappreciated.

Diligence is good.

Most of the time, I turn procrastination into motivation to get things done early so I don't have to scramble at the last minute. Other times, I've managed to leverage my laziness into patience or tolerance.

Being someone who gets things done is underappreciated. And also awesome.
