Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love.

I thought I'd make a few canon suggestions:

This Is How You Lose the Time War: (Book) Do you like the sound of, time traveling, shaping shifting women, enemies to lovers, and epistolary writing? Then this might be the book for you. People either seem to love or hate this book, I loved it. It is a beautiful written sci-fi love story, between two women who are on opposite sides in a war. The focus is on the two characters and their developing relationship, there is not much world building, but what you do get, makes you curious to know more.

Star Trek: The Original Series: (TV Series and Movies) I loved the original Star Trek as a kid, and this past year I rewatched the majority of the original series and all the TOS movies, and I found them delightful. I love the dynamic of the senior crew, especially the three main characters, Kirk, Spock and McCoy. The series had some wacky sci-fi plots, and had to deal with limited special effects, but so many of these ideas went on to become sci-fi staples. They also had some surprisingly progressive episodes, directly or indirectly, dealing with topics of war, race and environmental disasters. That being said, it was the 1960s so there are also problems, there is basically only one main woman recurring character, and she does not get enough screen time or development, there are a few sexist episodes, and there is no overarching narrative. If you want to know my thoughts about the movies, you can find them here and here

The Old Guard: (Movie) I know that tons of people watched this movie in 2020, but if you didn't please give it a go. We have immortal badasses who fight to save people, found family feels, a beautiful canon M/M pairing, and an implied past W/W pairing, plus no "bury you gays" trope. It is action packed, and violent at times, but trust me, there is a reason everyone on your feed was talking about it back in the summer.

Fortunate Son: (TV Series) This is a little known Canadian TV series, it is about a woman, in the 1960s, who helps a draft dodger sneak into Canada, and that is just the beginning. It is a mix of spy thriller and family drama, and a 1960s aesthetic. My favourite characters were two Canadian cops who are trying to figure out what the hell was going on, if you watched SPN then you will recognize the actor who played one of the cops. It has only 8 episodes so far, and whether there will be second season is up in the air, the main storyline was wrapped up, but they did leave it open for the possibility of a season 2. One of the drawbacks is that it is probably not even close to being historically accurate, but I don't think it was really intended to be. If you want more of my thoughts, you can check out my post here

Great choices! I loved The Old Guard this summer. I was one of the ones who saw it everywhere on my flist and decided to give it a shot and was so happy I did.

And Original Star Trek is a classic for a reason.

Never heard of the book, but I love time travel and am not bing on worldbuilding, so I'll check it out.

I'm going to see if Fortunate Son is on Netflix or something here. Sometimes we get Canadian shows, sometimes not.

Uhura not having a bigger role disappointed me when I tried to watch as a teen. But she's sacred to the Black community, lol. I think of Michael from Discovery as a spiritual successor. No Uhura, no Michael.

Thank you for participating!

I have an enormous affection for Star Trek (TOS). My big brother was a huge fan of it when it was shown in re-runs in England and I used to watch it with him.

Oh I watched the original series of Star Trek a child too. At that age, and in those days, it was just spectacular. I watched spellbound as they travelled through space and visited different planets, it was all so new and different to anything I had seen before. I mean, they had a spaceship! But yes, looking back there are many things which would be considered sexist and incorrect these days.

This Is How You Lose the Time War is wonderful! I kept reading about it and never picked it up and then I read a fic someone had written for it (they had asked for AO3 comments in the holiday_wishes comm) and really loved the conceit. So I picked up the book and have been kicking myself that I didn't read it earlier.

as one of the guys in my writing group pointed out back in july, this can't be the darkest timeline, because we have the old guard. :D

(i'm watching the crown and in the first couple seasons there are a bunch of references to malta, and i kept thinking "oh that time in malta". heh.)

The Old Guard! I saw posts on Tumblr and thought it was another older movie I'd missed seeing and was THRILLED when I discovered that it had just come out!

I took advantage of the beginning of quarantine to watch all of TOS. I had seen parts of it, but was more familiar with the newer stuff (esp TNG and DS9). All the TOS stuff is fantastic.

Adding that book to my TBR list!
