Challenge #15

Talk about an unexpected joyous moment you experienced last year.

I'm afraid I'm having a really hard time thinking of anything at the moment, I'm sure there was, but with all the bad stuff that has been happening in the world in the past couple of weeks it is hard to remember them right now.  Anyways, I thought I would mention a few goals I achieved in the past year instead.

1. I created roughly 700 pages on Fanlore last year, documenting fandom history is a bit of a passion of mine, also, if you have never visited Fanlore you really should, it's fun to go down fandom history rabbit holes there.
2. I finished my 2024 Book Bingo card!  This was the fourth year where I completed the cards I have created since the Livejournal Book Bingo kind of fizzled out.  It makes you feel so accomplished at the end of the year when you can see how many books you're read.
3. I moderated fandomtrees for the fifth year running!
4. I moderated my first exchanges on AO3, the Doctor Who Femslash Drabble Exchange and the Dead Boy Detectives Fic Exchange. I always wanted to try my hand at moderating an exchange on AO3, but it was very intimidating, but with some help from the Exchanges After Dark discord and reading tutorials online, I was able to successfully complete two single fandom exchanges this year.

That's about it, and that was actually pretty great when you look back on it.

One unrelated thing, I am giving away some Stranger Things stickers, so if you would like some, or know a teacher who might like them to give out to their class, please see this post.

Thanks to everyone for joining me in the Snowflake challenge this year!

Challenge #14

In your own space, create your own fandom challenge.

Challenge: Leave a comment on a fic with zero comments.

I know everyone does comment challenges, but they are the most fun and easy.  So, the challenge is to go to the tag on AO3 for your most recent fandom, sort by comments, and find a fic with no comments and leave a nice comment.  I did it for Granada Sherlock Holmes and left a comment on this fic.

Bonus challenge: Tell me your favourite "toxic yaoi" or "toxic yuri" ship.

I recently started a Fanlore page for Toxic Yaoi/Yuri, it's just a stub right now and could use some examples.  So, when you hear the terms "toxic yaoi" or "toxic yuri" what ships spring to mind?

Challenge #13

Interact with someone in fandom you haven't talked with before.

I wasn't sure what to do for this one, because I've been interacting with lots of people over the course of the challenge.  Anyways, I saw someone else fulfill the challenge by commenting on a fic for a fandom they've never read before, so I decided to do that too.  I commented on this Dance 10 fic, Little WildCat Fantasy, and it was kind of fun to find out the manga I've been slowly reading over the past couple of months actually has a fandom.  I've never heard anyone else ever mention it before, and I only discovered it because my local library has it, anyways it was nice surprise.

Challenge #11

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.

I looked back at previous years and I have mentioned this before, but Hurt/Comfort is still my favourite trope!  I especially love it when the character who is usually the caretaker gets taken care of.  Aziraphale rescuing Crowley? Yes please!  Holmes having to take of care Watson?  I eat that with a spoon!  Kirk or Spock caring for a weak and fevered Bones?  Now we're talking!  Someone wrapping up poor, battered Izzy and feeding him soup?  Give it to me now!

I can also read whump, but I think what I love about the trope the most is the comfort bit, which isn't always guaranteed in whump.  I need a good bit of comfort at the end to make it all better.

Challenge #10

In your own space, talk about one of your fandom firsts. This could be your first fandom, your first fandom friend, the first fanwork you created, the first fanwork you interacted with... The options are endless!

I wasn't sure what to put here at first, because I've talked about some of my early fandoms several times before and I don't really feel like doing to again, so instead I'm going to talk about the first time someone podficced one of my fics.

Back in 2020 was the first time someone podficced one of my fics, you can still see my squee post here. It is such a special feeling when someone chooses your fic and puts the time and effort into crafting an audio version of it. It is so interesting to see how they choose to interpret the character's voices, the inflections they use, where they chose to pause, or the emotion they put behind it. It can really change how you think about your own fic, sometimes how they preformed it is exactly how you pictured it in your head, but sometimes they do it differently and it makes you think about how your work is interpreted by others.

I've been very lucky to have a few of my fics podficced over the last few years, I made a promo post for them on tumblr, because they deserve more love, and I recently reblogged it adding the wonderful podfic of my OFMD fic The Past Is A Damaged Thing by the amazing [personal profile] peasina, that I got for fandomtrees.

Anyways, if you want your fic podficced the only tips I have are to have a transformative work statement, here is mine on my AO3 profile.  Other than that, sometimes there will be events/challenges where podficcers will ask fans to sign-up saying they give permission for their fics to be podficced, I remember doing that once or twice, I didn't get podfic from those events, but I think those lists often get shared among podfic communities.

Challenge #8

In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for a beloved character, relationship or fandom.

I have gushed enough about Sherlock Holmes lately, so I will talk about one of my other fave fandoms from the past year Dead Boy Detectives!

Title: Dead Boy Detectives

Media: Television series

Approx length: 8 episodes, approx 8 hours

Where to find it: Netflix

What is it, in summary?: Two teenage ghosts who solve mysteries and help other ghosts move on to the afterlife, while they themselves avoid Death so they won't be separated. The two teens are Edwin, "the brains", an Edwardian ghost who is intelligent, a bit snarky, and does magic, but has difficulties with social interactions outside of his partner Charles. Charles, "the brawn", is a ghost who died in 1990, he's kind, funny, and protective of Edwin, but struggles with issues from his past. That's the dynamic, until one day they meet Crystal, an alive teenage girl who is a physic, who can see and talk to them.

What do you love about it?: I love this series and characters so much! The dynamic between Edwin and Charles is right up my alley. They bicker like an old married couple, because they have lived, worked and been friends for 30 years! The addition of Crystal obviously shakes up things between them, and you discover there are things they have kept from each other. Plus, the later addition of Niko, who is a complete cinnamon role of a character. They make the prefect mystery solving quad.

Each episode is it's own contained mystery, but there is also a couple of overarching storylines. One of which is Edwin trying to figure out his own sexuality.

There is also a whole host of great side characters: The Cat King, a cat who is also a man, and can change form at will; The Night Nurse, a being from the afterlife who is trying to track down the boys (played fantastically by SPN's Ruth Connell!); Tragic Mick, a man that owns a magic shop, but was once a mighty walrus; Esther, an immortal witch, who is the main antagonist, and does not like the boys interfering in her plans; plus others!

The show did get cancelled after one season, which I'm still so sad about. However the majority of the story was wrapped up, there was only one plot point left open that would have been explored in season 2.

Content warnings: Warning for some horror elements, the show is more supernatural than horror, but there is some gore in a few scenes but not a lot, I was able to watch it just fine and I usually can't take much in the way of horror.
There is also discussions of past child abuse with one character.
This is part of the greater Sandman universe, but you don't need to watch The Sandman to enjoy it (I didn't watch Sandman and I loved it).
Note: this is based on the comics by Neil Gaiman. Gaiman does get credit for the series, but did not write for the TV series or was involved in its production, if that is a concern.

Who do I ship?: My main ship is Edwin/Charles, their dynamic just speaks to me, I love friends that are so ingrained with each other lives they are basically married, and yet haven't taken that step towards being romantic. I also ship Edwin/Cat King, the Cat King is a sexy, pathetic beast that is down bad for Edwin. I also ship Crystal/Niko a bit, they are so cute together and I think have great femslash potential.

Lastly, please let these gifs persuade you:

Challenge #7

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a wishlist of sorts.

1. Leave kudos and comments on my fanworks, here is my AO3, I write for a lot of different fandoms, like Good Omens, Star Trek, OFMD, among many others.

2. Leave a gift under my fandomtree, reveals are on the 18th, and I'm asking for Dead Boy Detectives, OFMD, Interview with the Vampire (TV series), Sherlock & Co, Doctor Who, and Ghosts. Minimum is only a drabble (100 words).

3. Since I didn't get into Granada Sherlock Holmes til after sign-ups for fandomtrees were over, I would also love drabbles/ficlets of Holmes/Watson, I would love ones where Holmes has to care for or rescue Watson, because Watson is the one always looking after Holmes in canon.

4. Recs for Granada Holmes/Watson fics (or fics based on the books where I can just picture the Granada boys in my head).  I swear it feels like I've read half the tag in the last couple of weeks, but I know that can't possibly be true.

5.
Read the Spones zine.  I'm one of the editors of the Spones (Spock/McCoy) zine.  A lot of talented people put a lot of effort into it.  Our latest issue is here and free to download.

6.
Go over to arab.org and "click to donate", it costs you nothing and all funds go towards UN agencies helping refugees.

Okay first off, I had to delay fandomtrees reveals because not everyone had two gifts, if you could take a look at the needy list I'd appreciate it, the minimum is only a drabble (100 words) for fic and a sketch for art. And now onto the Snowflake challenge!

Challenge #5

Talk about what has improved in your life thanks to fandom.

I don't know what to put here other than joy. Fandom has really given me joy in my life when other stuff is going badly.

Challenge #6

Share your favourite piece of original canon.

I could share so many things here, but since Sherlock Holmes has been taking over my brain, lets talk the Granada adaptation. I have mentioned before that this adaptation follows the books very closely, they make some changes, but the changes they do make I think work well. I'd say the biggest change is that Watson does not marry Mary Morstan after the Sign of Four, there is some hint that he is attracted to her in that episode, however nothing ever comes of it. I think this probably made sense for the TV series production wise, plus it is great for the viewer, because Holmes and Watson remain together at Baker St. for the entire series.

They are so married in this adaptation! I don't mean that literally, it was shot in the late 1980s and early 1990s, so they are nothing but best friends in canon, but they do very much act like they are the most important people in each other's lives. Plus they bicker like an old married couple much of the time.

There are two different actors who play Watson during the series, which sounds bad, but they really made it work. I talk more about the two Watsons in this meta post if you're interested. Another thing is that both actors are in their late middle ages (50s) when the show starts, and you get to see them growing older together, and there is something wonderful in that. I don't know if it is just me, but I find it hard to imagine Holmes and Watson as young, when I read the books when I was young I always pictured them as older men.

I'm pretty sure the whole series is on YouTube, the Youtube channel Your Daily Brew has I think all the episodes uploaded, and they are in the original TV format, so they don't look stretched like others do. Unfortunately, they are not in a playlist, so you will have to check Wikipedia first to get the viewing order.

Anyways, if my blabbering hasn't sold you on the show, enjoy some shippy gifs instead:

Challenge #4

Since this is the start of a new year, this challenge will be to set your own goals! Of course we can all make large or ambitious goals, remember that small and/or short goals are also good!

I really don't do the making new year's goals thing, it usually just ends up putting too much pressure on me and I don't enjoy it. I will be doing my Book Bingo Card again this year, it's fun and low pressure, if you're interested you can check out this year's card here.

I will keep working on my Comment Bingo Card, it's already about half full. If you guys haven't tried [community profile] comment_bingo you really should, their 8th round is currently doing sign-ups, it's pretty fun and easy, and encourages commenting on fics/fanworks.

So, that's about it.  I may do some other fanworks challenges this year, but I haven't decided yet.

Challenge #3

In your own space, talk about a fannish opinion you hold that has changed over time.

I think when I was younger I was much more of a canon purist, like I would get upset if they made a movie or TV show from a book/comic/an older series and they would leave parts out or change things, but now I usually just see them as alternative universes.  Not to say I don't get angry with some of the choices that are sometimes made by creators, I do, but I think I have a little more perspective on things then I used to.  I hate to say this, but when I was young I think at times I was one of those "well, actually" kids, not to be intentionally annoying I don't think, but because I wanted everyone to know how good the original was.

I'm not super enlightened now or anything, there are still adaptations of things I haven't watched because what I've heard about them makes me upset, and I'm like "you know what, that is just going to upset you, don't watch it.  No one is taking the original thing away from you."  I just think I'm a little more protective of myself and my time.  Life's too short to be watching media that makes you angry, real life throws enough stuff at you.

Anyways, that is my backhanded way of talking about Star Trek, X-Men, and a whole host of media franchises, lol.

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story.

In past I've talked about my mom and Star Trek, shows I liked as a kid, and how I didn't get into transformative fandom until I was an adult because I lived in a rural area without reliable internet, so I won't repeat all that.

So, since I've recently gotten into watching the 1980s-1990s Granada Sherlock Holmes. I thought I would talk about my love of Sherlock Holmes as a teenager. I'm not completely sure when I started reading the Holmes stories, but I think it was probably my first year of High School. I liked mysteries before this, I remember reading stories about three boys who solved mysteries as a kid, and no it wasn't the Hardy Boys, probably one of their many clones. Anyways, my high school library was mostly non-fiction, but it had a mezzanine with fiction books, and I think that is where I read my first Sherlock Holmes book. Later on, my grandmother gifted me a Reader's Digest collection of the short stories.

I remember going to a 4-H meeting and as part of a get to know you thing we were all supposed to share our favourite book, and I said The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and everyone looked at like I was weird. (I guess late 19th century mysteries were not a normal thing for teenagage girls to be interested in, ha!)

I eventually moved on to other things, but I've come back to it in some form or another over the years, usually adaptations like Elementary, and it's been a joy. However, the Granada series is so close to the books it's like visiting an old friend. I'm pretty sure I never saw the Granada series as a young teen, even though it would have been around the right time period, because if I had I think I would have probably been obsessed with it.

When I went to London about a decade ago now we visited the Sherlock Holmes museum at 221b Baker St, and I have a leather bookmark I bought from the gift shop I use it a lot, and always try and use when I read mysteries.

Anyways, I think teenage me might be surprised, but also be happy that I have got back into Sherlock Holmes again.

(One note, because I know someone will ask, but I never got into BBC's Sherlock. I didn't have access at first, and later when I saw clips of it I really didn't like how the Holmes/Watson relationship was portrayed, from what I saw. Holmes can be rude and mean to Watson occasionally, but what some adaptations fail at is showing the respect and fondness Holmes had for Watson, and as much as I love Holmes I love John Watson even more.)

Your fandom personality in 2023 was: (i.e. Fandom Eeyore, Twitter Refugee, Discord Party Animal, etc.)

In 2023, you discovered: (that you adore hockey RPF, but you hate the Liberty Mutual emu, etc.)
  • I tried a few new shows this year, I enjoyed them, but I didn't really become fannish about any of them,  The one exception is Doctor Who, which I am dipping my toe into, but it is so new I don't know if that will last long term, so we will have to wait and see.

Challenge #13

Make a rec list!

Okay, I already made a rec list for Day 10 of the Snowflake Challenge of fics that have stuck with me over the years. So I thought this time I would rec some more recent finds I have enjoyed:

All Along There Was Some Invisible String Tying You To Me by ciabattabread
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Donna & Ten, Donna & Fourteen
Rating: G
Word Count: 924 words
Summary: Something happened to Donna Noble during the year she lost. Out of the corner of her eye, she can just see another string, a second connection... but for whom? And why can't she remember?
Notes: I'm not normally one for soulmate AUs, but I loved the idea of Donna and the Doctor being platonic soulmates.

Blackbeard and the Gentleman Pirate Answer the Web's Most Searched Questions | WIRED
by charlieloverboy
Fandom: Our Flag Means Death
Pairing: Ed/Stede/Izzy
Rating: G
Word Count: 2252 words
Summary:
FOR PUBLIC RELEASE
Video title: “Blackbeard and the Gentleman Pirate Answer the Web's Most Searched Questions | WIRED”
From WIRED Entertainment
Notes: I don't how this author did it, but I can completely picture this interview inside my head (maybe I have just watched way too many of these types of videos in the past). The dialogue flowed in such a way to be consistent with these types of interviews, and it also felt in character. The story does a great job of releasing tidbits of information about their life in this modern AU. I only wish there was a companion fic for this piece showing how they got together, because I would read the hell out of that. I head-canon that Izzy is Ed's manager/producer.

Asking for More Again by mossylog5
Fandom Our Flag Means Death
Pairing: Ed/Stede/Izzy
Rating: M
Word Count: 6691 words
Summary: Israel Hands is having a no-good very-bad day. He’s locked himself out, it’s snowing, and the only place he can reasonably go is his ex-husband's new partner’s house. And on top of it all, he’s got a fucking cold.
Notes: This is just my type of fic, Izzy being sick and being forced to accept care. Although this has the basic set-up for a lot of Steddyhands Modern AUs, I did like this author's interpretation of it, and how Ed and Izzy actually manage to talk about their feelings.

I'm In Love With My Own Sins by turps
Fandom: Marvel Comics/MCU
Pairing Clint/Bucky
Rating: G
Word Count: 6816 words
Summary: Magic. It's always magic.
Notes: Bodyswap fic! This isn't one of my usual pairings, but I enjoyed this one. I love how Clint and Bucky are just so used to weird stuff happening to them they're not even that phased by the bodyswap.

Comfort Amongst Chaos by WillowTea
Fandom: Good Omens
Pairing: Azirphale/Crowley
Rating: T
Word Count: Fancomic!
Summary: Crowley shows up at the bookshop spouting incoherent nonsense about Aziraphale being in danger and needing to keep the angel safe. Aziraphale does his best to understand and comfort Crowley through what is a difficult time.
Notes: I was gifted this fantastic comic for the Good Omens Holiday Exchange. The artist does such a great job with the expressions, you can feel Crowley's fear and Aziraphale's worry.

Speaking of Good Omens, enjoy this fun vid with a some nice editing:

Challenge #12
Tell Us about a Personal Win.

I'm going to take successfully modding [community profile] fandomtrees as a win. It might not sound like much, because I do it every year, but this past holiday season I was sick, then my brother got it and then my elderly mother. It wasn't covid, we tested, but whatever it was it still sucked. Plus, there was other stuff going on, so I am proud of the fact that I was able to finish it.

Speaking of fandomtrees, I heard back from the last giftee I made a moodboard for, so now I can share it!

Challenge #11

In your own space, create a fanwork.

Okay I'm going to cheat a little bit here, and instead of creating a new one from scratch I'm going to share some fanworks that I recently created and where just revealed for fandomtrees.

Moodboards:

Doctor Who - Doctor & Donna Moodboard:

Also here on tumblr.

Batman Comics - Duke Thomas & Jason Todd Moodboard:

Also here on tumblr.

I have one more moodboard I made for fandomtrees, but I haven't heard back from the giftee yet, so I don't want to share it until they've had a chance to see it first.

Fanfic:

Good Fashion
Fandom: Loki TV series
Pairing: Loki/Mobius
Word Count: 123 words
Summary: Loki and Mobius discuss 16th century fashion.

Doctor Dancing
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Ninth Doctor/Jack Harkness
Word Count: 112 words
Summary: The Ninth Doctor and Jack at a party together.

Illuminating, My Sweet
Fandom: Good Omens
Pairing: Aziraphale/Crowley
Word Count: 1035 words
Summary: Crowley tries to get a special book for Aziraphale, things don't go as planned.

These are mostly just ficlets and one-shots, but I still enjoyed creating them.

I also made a bunch of icons, but I am so behind on sharing those, hopefully someday I will get around to posting an icon dump.

Anyways, I hope you liked these and you have a good day.

Challenge #8

Talk about a current fannish project (fic, art, vid, crochet, funko pop village) (that you are creating or enjoying)

Oh man, I have a couple of projects I recently worked on for exchanges, including a vid I'm proud of, but I can't share them yet because creator reveals haven't happened yet!

Here are a couple of fics I can share:

Poinsettia Presenting Prettily
Fandom: Good Omens
Pairing: Aziraphale/Crowley
Rating: G
Word Count: 1355 words
Summary: Crowley has been cultivating a gift for Aziraphale all year, and no sudden snowstorm is going to stop Crowley from giving it to him.
Note: I wrote this one for the Good Omens Holiday Exchange, I think its cute.  It does take place at Christmas time, but I think you can still enjoy it fine now.

Shelter For My Bones
Fandom: Our Flag Means Death
Pairing: Izzy/Ed/Stede
Rating: T
Word Count: 3275 words (WIP)
Summary: After Ed has moved out, Izzy is having a rough time of it, but this changes one night when Stede accidentally runs into Izzy outside a community kitchen. (Modern AU)
Note: I rarely ever post my work in progress fics, but I just had to with this one, because the idea was eating my brain; Izzy experiencing homelessness after Ed leaves to be with Stede.  People seem to be enjoying it too.  It is very much Izzy hurt/comfort or will be eventually.

I hope you have a nice day!

- We Go Together - Star Trek's Spones, that is Spock/McCoy, zine (I am actually part of the behind the scenes team for this one, my role is mostly just cheerleader)

Challenge #6

In your own space, share a favourite piece of original canon (a show, a specific TV episode, a storyline, a book or series, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much

I've been having a terrible day so, cut for mention of death )

Anyways, I didn't know what to put for this post. Last year I raved about Izzy Hands, I still love him to bits, but I'm still super sad about how season 2 ended so I'm choosing someone different this year.

I thought I would go with a classic fave of mine Carol Peletier from The Walking Dead. She probably has one of the best character arcs in a series I've ever seen, going from fearful abuse victim to fierce protector of her group of survivors, with a whole bunch of trauma along the way. I don't know if I can recommend TWD overall, it dragged on for way too long, and I stopped watching after the stupidness that was All Out War. Plus, you can only watch so much zombie apocalypse stuff for so long before it starts to get to you. That being said, Carol is still one of my all time favourite characters. Enjoy this vid, it does contain spoilers, but it probably won't matter out of context. It is just her being a badass for most of it:
