A Reckoning of Swords 00
Dec. 31st, 2025 03:56 amWell, I went ahead and fixed the factually incorrect stuff on my fanlore page. I've actually had a fanlore account since, like, 2018, apparently, but never used it. My page is still hilariously something but... shrugemoji, I guess. I did drop a bunch of pages onto a watchlist which should at least help me catch things faster than noticing them like six months later. (I still get emails from the Gundam wiki which I made an account for and made exactly one edit to, fixing the color of Gai Murakumo's eyes.)
Since it the Season of Updating Things, I thought to finally put up a new transformative works policy instead of my very angry 'no, don't' from June. I am still technically upset about the whole thing; I suppose that's part of what a revised policy will help mitigate. I have, however, learned that some people have very thorough, comprehensive policies! Not just a concise paragraph, which I thought was expected/the norm. I've received some very good advice and suspect I'll spend a few days letting it all roll around in the back of my mind. (I suspect I just wrapped my head around the idea all wrong?)
I finished up Calibarn, aside from one clip that absolutely shattered before I'd even put any pressure on it, let alone the sort of pressure that would normally damage plastic. I cemented it back together and will give it most of a day to cure before trying again. Worst case, I glue a fixed position. It's on its weapon, which may get ditched for display anyway since there's a plan for Calibarn...
The quest for flat surfaces continues. I still feel like the dining room should be easy to conquer so that's where I've mostly started.

Hornblower and the 'Atropos' by C. S. Forester
Dec. 31st, 2025 12:48 pmThis is the eighth Hornblower novel in publication order and the fourth in internal chronological order; the first-published novel The Happy Return being the fifth in the chronology, the series has now come full circle, as becomes increasingly clear towards the end of this book.
( With all the will in the world, diving for dear life, when we could be diving for pearls )
Forester then went and messed things up by writing two more novels (and half of a third) totally out of order, but never mind, I'll see what I think of those next.

New Year's Eve
Dec. 31st, 2025 10:20 amThinking ahead to next year. I've signed up to GYWO of course.
The Fannish 50 is running again but I didn't go great with it previously. I might pick it up again on my terms.
smallhobbit has come up with 26 photos for the year which a lovely way to record the year and post regularly and in this post has an impressive list of courses completed. I've checked out the free courses and identified a couple of Open University ones that looked interesting. My new job has a subscription to National College and are keen for me to do some sort of Continuing Professional Development next year, so at some point I guess I'm be learning something in a structured way :)
I would like to finish the 100 prompts LiveJournal table, started a lifetime ago. And make in-roads on the 100 fandoms. I might ask for help with encouragement/brainstorming for the LJ table. And of course more crafting. Nephew loved the sheep bauble I made for his grandparents that he wants one for his March birthday so that's on the list.
Best wishes as we approach 2026!

New Year's Resolutions Check In
Dec. 31st, 2025 12:55 amWe made it to the end of December! All the way through 2025! \o/ If you made it this far -- even if you haven't finished everything you hoped for -- then pat yourself on the back. You worked hard for that. We have reached the beginning of winter. If you're doing seasonal goals, share what you're working on for this winter.
This year I'm trying something new, continuing to track goals at the end of each month. So far it seems to be helping, so that's encouraging. I'm looking at my goal list more often and trying to keep ticking off more of them. The main drawback is that this update becomes more of a chore each month. I have some new ideas to lighten the load for next year.

FANVIDS DAY
Dec. 31st, 2025 10:25 amI've loved many fanvids, and unfortunately saved very few of them :/. But I encountered a few when I was going through my Black Sails tag to hunt for recommendations, and I decided to share those, and a few others, to close rec-cember.
Black Sails
- Charles Vane + "Bella Ciao" (Chumbawamba's version) by @somfte.
- John Silver + "Money Money Money" (Mama Mia!'s version) by @findsilver.
- Max & John Silver + "Nobody" (Mitski) by @whereyoudontseeme.
- Mr. Scott, Eleanor, and Madi + Spiegel im Spiegel (Arvo Pärt) by @somfte.
Others
- Buffy/Faith + "Feelin' Kinda Naughty" (the "I want to wear your skin" song in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) by @amelia.
- Phoebe Halliwell & Sam Winchester + "What's New" (Megan Thee Stallion) by @claudiabian.
- Polyphemus (the Odyssey) + "Nobody" (Mitski, again) by @barrbodiedberry
- Spacekru (The 100) + "Home II" (Dotan) by @bombshellsandbluebells
ALSO I discovered this too late to recommend it in the Murderbot Diaries's post, but: here's some (way too sexy) Murderbot art 😔
And at last, a couple of Yuletide recommendations!
- Knife, a Rope (1948) fic. 4.9k, M. It shows a bit of how Brandon and Phillip came to be... whatever they are in the film, to each other. Superb characterisation.
- night-trap, a Carmilla (novella) fic. 7.6k, M. Years after the novella, the two women meet again. GREAT "becoming the monster" take, with very vivid prose.
Looking back on writing this year, as the year comes to an end
Dec. 31st, 2025 09:25 amI did spend an hour editing the Kaijuu No. 8 fic this morning, so the K-9 fever is truly no longer up to a vibration-inducing 11 XD Just a more manageable 8 or 9 depending on the hour of the day. And I really enjoyed rereading the last couple of chapters of the kn8 fic to remember where I was at. THESE GUYS :D This is for an OT3 that doesn't have any fic for it yet. I hope there'll be a couple of readers out there curious enough to check it out anyway, and see if they too can appreciate and share the vision :D
With the end of the year in sight, I've been thinking about how writing went this year. I am, of course, not meeting my
getyourwordsout pledge again (150K words), haha. It'll land around 114k. Wordcount-wise, it's been clear for a while that this would be my lowest year EVER since recordings began (aka 2020 ;)). For a couple of months there, it even looked like I might not even reach 100k, just because I was still editing so much and writing so short well into November. Then I picked up the kn8 fic to revise, and had to add and expand on a lot of missing scenes/do more showing (anchoring ;D) which helped a lot with finally reaching that milestone, phew. Little did I know K-9 would happen to me shortly after and make December the month with my second highest word count this year, haha.

Also, something interesting is going to happen in 2026! Adding all my word counts from 2020 until today, the total comes to 975K. Obviously, everything could go spectacularly to shit, but based on the past few years, there's a very good chance I'm going to reach that 1 million words milestone next year. I'm a bit nervous because I started writing again in 2020 firmly with a quote in mind, something I'd heard around the lines of "everybody has 1 million bad words in them before they can get to the good ones; unfortunately the only way to get rid of them is to write them out" and that's been a source of comfort when my writing doesn't always meet the standard I hope for. What will I do if word #1,000,001 is actually pretty crap anyway, though?? Haha. My mind is already preparing "well it wasn't 1M words of novel-sized projects, so you have to keep at it anyway" etc etc, so I will probably be okay either way ;)
But still. Something to look forward to :)

2025 Companion
Dec. 31st, 2025 06:20 pmWell, yeah - I did some stuff. I always want to do more! I finished my story, so that was something... I do want to write more, I am just achingly slow at it. I wish we still had some comment fic communities around. Next year I hope to finish off the OFMD icon sets, continue with the 13th Doctor, and bang out some more SG wallpapers (should I do a rewatch?). I was also thinking of redoing some of those early SG episode batches that just don't have the detail and thought in them that older ones do (do I need an excuse for more Stargate?!?).
( Things & Stuff, Stuff & Things... )
I might also redo the layout of this page... I want the elements to sit nicer... bane of Dreamwidth!
