Stranger Things 4
Jul. 3rd, 2022 08:12 pmI binged Stranger Things this weekend, and wow! This season was awesome, better than season 3 I think. Spoiler discussion from this point on.
The Hawkins plot was great, most of the teens and kids working together, and I loved the focus on Max. I will also say the show does a great job of introducing new characters and making you like them in a short amount of time, we had Chrissy for one episode, and I really liked her and wanted to know more about her. Same with Fred. And Eddie, goddamn, they really turned the the drug dealer, metal head stereotype on it's head. I also loved the 1950s stuff and how it eventually tied into El's storyline, which I have to admit I did not see coming
I liked the rescue from Russia. The awful stuff Hopper went through was excruciating at points, especially the feet, if you know what I mean. I loved Joyce's determination, and all the double crossing. We finally got canon Jopper! Yay! I also liked that they didn't just forget about the demogorgon that Russians had, and instead worked that into the plot. I will say the one drawback of this storyline was that Joyce and Hopper spent almost the entire season away from all the other characters and the main plot.
The El storyline was interesting, it was great to get a lot more about her backstory. I do wish that they had maybe shortened it a little bit, but it does become integral to the plot. I kind of love how all the threads of the story worked together, how the experiments on children in the lab was connected to the upside down and the ultimate threat to Hawkins. I also liked how important El's friendship with Max was.
My one big disappointment is how sidelined Will was to the plot, and not just Will, but also Mike and Jonathan. Like there was some action there in the beginning, but they dwindled on the sideline until they were needed to save El near the end. It is so frustrating that Will was such a central part of the plot for the first two seasons, but now is just not very important, like please someone just give this boy a good storyline again! I will say that Will and his confusion about his feelings towards Mike was a little heartbreaking, especially since Mike was so oblivious. They are obviously leaning into Will is gay without coming straight out and saying that.
One other thing, I did not like the return of the Steve-Nancy-Jonathan love triangle, like I thought that was resolved. I really want Steve to find someone who appreciates him, who makes him their number one person. As much as I like Nancy I just don't think that is something she is willing to do, at least not at this point.
I have no idea where they are taking season 5, but I hope it's an epic conclusion.
