  1. Soup recipes! I have to admit I've been looking forward to making this request ever since I thought of it :)

  2. Recs for space horror media or fics

  3. Read one of my poems from this year if you're so inclined?

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

This one stumped me, as I don't get out much, so here are some literal last pages:

Last new to me song I discovered was... Los Lobos, who I only knew from their mildly pleasant cover of 'La Bamba,' decided to earn a thousand cool points by getting Richard Thompson to guest star on their song 'Wreck of the Carlos Rey,' which I had somehow never heard. I have clearly unfairly ignored these guys. Their sound works seamlessly with Thompson's.

Last fanfic I read was... You've Given Me Back My Life (Downton Abbey, of all the random fandoms I haven't thought of in years). Unfinished, Edith/Anthony fix fic with a marriage of convenience which makes more sense than that awful "wreck the lives of loyal tenant farmers" plot the show writers went with instead. Does not matter to me if it's ever finished, it was fun if you like Downton Abbey style melodrama.

Title: Shackleton's Forgotten Expedition: The Voyage of the Nimrod
Author: Beau Riffenburgh
Published: 2004
Rating: 4 of 5
Page Count: 305
Total Page Count: 557,485
Text Number: 2096
Read Because: cold boys secondary sources; this is a belated review from summer last year and for the life of me I cannot remember how I got my hands on the book
Review:
Riffenburgh is a mediocre technical writer, which makes for clumsy sentence construction and scene transitions. And while I can't fault his research, his agenda is weirdly obvious—he's a complicated and critical Shackleton stan, which nevertheless makes him a Wilson and Scott hater. But, structurally, this is well-balanced: Shackleton's reputation as the failure of the British National Antarctic Expedition vs. the image fostered in the rest of his career hinges at the Nimrod, so there's a lot of the Discovery but a willingness to skim later and better-known details of the Endurance.

As for Shackleton. 1) He reminds me of Borchgrevink of the Southern Cross, chasing fame, uninterested in science, not very good at planning; Shackleton's rapport with (select of) his men and aptitude for leadership sets him apart, but it's clear that public response to the Southern Cross vs. the Nimrod was fueled purely by British chauvinism. 2) He's insufferable! 3) The excess of close calls in the return journeys from both geographic and magnetic pole attempts further cements my opinion that trying to identify the exact causes of Scott's failure in 1912 is a situation of forest and trees, the problem more fundamental than any specifics: as soon as you start a man-hauling across the Antarctic, you are one unlucky run from death.

It's a janky read, but I'm grateful this exists; there's a regretful dearth of secondary sources about the not-big-name Antarctic expeditions. And oh, how I wish more of the journals had ever been published!

The 1960’s through 1980’s saw so many popular anthologies and compendiums of vampire lore—often assembling pop culture, folklore, classic literature, psychology, and occultism together—that I have no memory now of where I encountered this story.

Content advisory: blood ingestion; colonialism; racism; ableism, eugenics, and medical abuse in a footnote link. Continue. )

If I can track down the book, that might give me a lead as to who originated it (and what their assumptions and agenda might be.)

First five star within the first week of January; can't hate that. The fact that it also gets my favorite tag is also surely a coincidence and not indicative of the fact that I'm swayed by personal taste. Anyway, Of Thunder & Lightning was incredible. Still on a Silver Sprocket binge.

Review: Reunited by an ecological study in advance of commercial development, two estranged friends enter into an antagonistic romantic relationship. Good intentions, but lackluster execution on all fronts. Characters and even timelines are difficult distinguish in the simplified art style, muddying an underdeveloped script; the metaphor the heart of the story works, but fails to come alive.

Review: Two magical-girl cyborgs fight on opposite sides of a commercialized, televised war for humanity. I can be in no ways unbiased: this could have been written just for me, so I'm blind to flaws. Star-crossed love known and enacted in the intimacy of violence would be enough to do it for me, but this also has gratifying layout tricks and a dynamic style that's especially good at capturing the combative and conflicted expressions that the narrative demands. I read it twice for sheer pleasure; I can't wait to see what

Review: Collections are perforce a mixed bag, and this is no exception; but I like it more than not, which wasn't what I was expecting when greated with the simplistic, cartoony art style awash in negative space. But it works surprisingly well, both to contrast the horror and when broken up by more painterly, dense panels. The brevity makes some of the stories feel gimmicky, but what playful, unsettling creativity! Standouts for me are the sensual "I Like to Squeeze into Tight Places," the more developed "Too Much on Your Plate," and the perfect simplicity of "At the End."

Watch for the parallel check in post over on [community profile] goals_on_dw. Its busy season is December-January, with weekly check-in posts for January, then monthly after that.

Feeling very knife-y today

Feeling very knife-y today. Not stabby, exactly, but man, the news has just been unrelenting war, death, and aggression lately, and although things have been relatively calm where I live (compared to Minneapolis, Portland, or Chicago) I can’t help but feel like we’re next.

I had an Uber driver a couple of weeks ago — white guy, trucker hat, flannel shirt, came in a big SUV, and I really wasn’t sure if I should talk politics since he very well *might* have been a MAGA sort — but we’re not in the car two minutes before we passed a bumper sticker or a sign or something that made him say, “dang, I just don’t know what to do with this country… do you think we’re going to have to fend off an invasion by the National Guard?

Turns out he only looks like a lumberjack: he’s got a PhD in political science. He was thinking of taking a course in field medicine first aid, figuring that would be the most useful thing he could do on the front lines. “I can’t believe I’m even talking about this,” he said. “But here we are.” I encouraged him to take the course. More healers can only be a good thing.

Speaking of which, a list of “things you can do besides protest or vote” is going around, and one of the suggestions is get trained in “PFA” which is “psychological first aid.” The Canadian Red Cross offers online courses, one in PFA self-care, and one in helping others. Red Cross/Red Crescent has a whole curriculum built around the recognition that mental health is crucial for any kind of help providers as well as those being helped.

I’m thinking of doing at least the self care course…? It’s only $20 (Canadian!).

Meanwhile, you can see my mood reflected in the swag I just designed for my book launch next week. Photo below. (Skip the rest of this post if you want to skip the book biz stuff. I know it’s a weird-ass time to be trying to launch a book… )

Day 3: Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

Fandom, I love you and I don't know what to do you with you. I can't imagine not being a part of it even as I struggle to be a part of it. And for all the negatives over the years, you've brought me far more joy.

*

Day 4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page: Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

The last fannish thing I looked at was a chapter within [personal profile] starspray's marvelous Silmarillion fanfic series focusing on Maglor-and-family "Meanwhile the World Goes On" because I'm in the middle of rereading it. The series summary: Following Maglor as he suffers through captivity in Dol Guldur, and his journey to healing afterward--and then the journey to reconciliation of all the House of Feanor. Ratings and warnings vary by fic; it's still a WIP series and has consistent, frequent updates. It's available on SWG and on AO3.

Challenge #5: In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

I'm just going to link my FandomTrees page, which has four wishes: https://fandomtrees.dreamwidth.org/207803.html
Reveals are January 17. The wishes are for prompts for Star Wars Disney canon fic, asking for fic recs for Star Wars Legends (focused on Luke or Luke/Mara), video game recs, and GERD-friendly recipes (as I am newly diagnosed and struggling a bit).
