Title: History can't be changed
Creator: [archiveofourown.org profile] Melime
Rating: Teen
Word Count/Length/Size: 603 words
Creator's Summary: As they watch separatists being taken away, Susan wants to help, but Barbara knows this history and sometimes she has to agree with the Doctor that they shouldn't interfere with the course of history.
Characters/Pairings: Barbara Wright, Susan Foreman, Ian Chesterton, First Doctor
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: This is a great example of why the historicals are good - it tells me a little about a period in history and gives me an impetus to learn more. Plus it's also interesting to see Barbara here, knowing what's going to happen and understanding why she can't change history, unlike in The Aztecs.

This month I've picked sunrises to share - we've had a fair amount of rain, so it's been good to see as many as we have:

One book, one December meme response

Happy Gravy Day to those who celebrate! It's been a bit of a disjointed few days. I'm working right up to (and including) 24th December, so there's the usual mad scramble to deal with the inevitable mad scramble of students and researchers wanting to 'wrap things up before Christmas,' I'm trying to get all the food shopping and Christmas preparation done around that, and to top it all off, both Matthias and I have been sick. He's mostly better now, and I'm on the way to recovery, but the timing was less than ideal.

[personal profile] author_by_night suggested that I talk about the discrepancy between conventional understanding of history (based to a large extent on the experiences of the upper echelons of society), and the realities of ordinary people's lives for the December talking meme, and although I don't really feel qualified to provide a definitive answer to this, I'll do my best.

I've picked up The Dark Is Rising for my annual winter solstice reread, but haven't finished it yet, and have otherwise only finished one other book this week: The Art of a Lie (Laura Shepherd-Robinson), another great novel by one of my favourite writers of historical fiction. This was a page-turning, enjoyable read with all the features I've come to enjoy about Shepherd-Robinson's books: a scammer in eighteenth-century London embarks on a new con job on a wealthy widow, and finds he's picked a more savvy and complicated mark than his usual targets. The book switches perspectives, each time revealing more unreliabilities in its pair of narrators, pulling the rug out from each other and from the reader with every shift in point of view. As always, the author's extensive research and rich evocation of this period in history is on full display — I was delighted to learn more about eighteenth-century confectionery- and ice-cream-making, law-enforcement in London before it had a dedicated police force, and all the various opportunities for scamming and corruption (most of which are essentially unchanged to this day — there was a common 'Spanish prisoner' scam which is identical to today's 'Nigerian prince' scam).

And that's about it for this week. I hope everyone else is having a restful time.

Back in 2016 I wrote a little fic called Problem (Teen Wolf; Derek/Stiles; PG13). For this round of [community profile] holiday_wishes, [personal profile] peasina created a podfic for that story!

You can find it here: Podfic of Problem by Peasina.

I listened to it this morning and it was really cute and well done. I hope you all enjoy it!

This was a no-shopping day until Pip got a hold of it. In fact, I had no intention of going downtown at all. But the coffee maker at the garage broke and no one can live without their coffee so Pip took our Keurig to the shop and I needed to get another one for the house. (I also stopped at Dollar General for the final GC I needed.)

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and changed kitty litter. (Yes, you read that correctly. Midnight decided to take a poop outside the litter box, so since I had to clean the area anyway, decided I might as well change it a day early.) I stopped by the post office to mail what is most likely my final Christmas card and the library to pick up a book.

Today was the garage Christmas party (for their customers, as opposed to the dinner at the Bear’s which is for the employees). I put in an appearance, but I don’t know a lot of his customers, so I don’t stay long. Still, free lunch. *g* On the plus side, I got to see Former Librarian, who I went to lunch with a little while back (she’s also a customer at the garage) and the friends we go to Texas Roadhouse with (also customers), so I wasn’t all by myself.

I wrapped/bagged/boxed almost all of the Christmas presents I bought (to be fair, mostly books and gift cards * g* but there are a few other items from places like Bath & Body), which makes me happy! I can often be found doing that on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. o_O (I just have mom’s and Pip’s to do.)

I started the second Jack Reacher book and had Dr. Pol as my evening background tv.

Temps started out at 25.5(F) (and was still only 25.7 four hours later, which makes me wonder how much lower it went before it started going back up) and reached 34.3 (at around noon, and then immediately started going down). The sun was out, so it was nice and warm in the car, but don’t let it fool ya, because when you step outside it is COLD!

I woke up this morning to the sad news that firesign10/fireheart13 has passed away.

She was one for the first friends I made over on Lj and I will always remember her kindness and support to her friends throughout the years.

Rest in peace lovely lady x

doranwen: the last five lines of an Archibald Lampman poem called Snow (The world seems shrouded)
[personal profile] doranwen posting in [community profile] holiday_wishes
I'm so late with posting - have been utterly swamped by life and projects in the past few weeks. It's been exciting seeing all your wishlists come in and I hope I can find a few minutes to check out some and see if there's anything I can contribute.

This year I don't have a ton of things to wish for:

1. Volunteer to help with the Yahoo Groups (Fandom) Rescue Project. It's a massive project but it would be so neat to get it all done, and 100 good volunteers would do it. Other than anime in general (some specific fandoms not counted there) and a few tiny things, most areas are still open for tagging (everything from genealogy to bands to alumni groups to every fandom under the sun that existed before 2019). All you need is time, the ability to use Google Sheets, and the ability to be careful with details. If you can't do one of those, maybe you know someone who could and might be interested in helping? Just tell them about the project, perhaps? :)

2. Old educational software (game or not) for Windows you don't want or can't use: (But definitely ask me first, in case I already have it and you'd be wasting your time/money to send them here.) I'm taking old computers people can't use or don't want, putting Linux on them, and configuring them to be useful for a local school or low-income families. If the computers are relatively new enough (like Windows 10, as opposed to Windows XP or 7) I can install a software program called Lutris which acts as a one-stop game/program launcher for games from a number of sources - not only modern Linux ones, but modern Windows games, DOS, Amiga, and my favorite - old games (generally abandonware at this point) that ran on Windows 3.1/95/98. It's easier to run them on Linux now than Windows, and I've been figuring out how to create Lutris installer scripts for many games to make it easy for others. So if you find you have CDs of educational software/games from that era which are buggy or just don't run on your Windows 10/11 computer, and you want to get rid of them, I'm happy to be the destination for them.

3. Donate older-but-still-usable electronics to organizations that can make them useful. I love seeing computers revitalized with Linux. While I'm sure you're too far from me to donate any to my project (anyone in western WA state? lol), there are organizations in many locations that will refurbish and make older computers useful. (Though I maintain that to really make use of old hardware you have to switch away from Windows - which is far more resource-hungry than most Linux distros. I don't know how many organizations consider that one, lol.)

4. Write me a fanfic! You can find my fanfic exchange letters here.
Fandom list (going back to 2019 as far as the exchange letters go): 1-800-Missing (TV), Alphas, C-16: FBI, Cybergeddon, Earth Girl, Gold Diggers (1996), Law & Order: SVU, Leverage, Lois & Clark:TNAOS, Profiler, Push (2009), Rizzoli & Isles, Rookie Blue, Smallville, Sue Thomas F.B.Eye, The Pretender, Tomorrow When the War Began (2010), Women's Murder Club (TV), Worldweavers, X-Men original timeline movies

I'm not currently interested in receiving Matrix fic, and haven't watched past S3 of FBI and S2 of FBI: Most Wanted, so although you'll find those in the exchange letters, it's probably best to stay clear of those (unless you think you can write a spoiler-free FBI or FBI MW fic). And I know this is very, very late to ask for a fic, and I absolutely don't expect one by Christmas or New Year's or anything like that - but you will honestly make me happy *any* time of the year if you write me a fic, so if this is something you think you can do, please don't worry about timeframes. :) (Use the DNW list from the most recent letter or letters if you do.)

5. Obligatory Amazon wishlist: Here
I'm always good with used books, and for CDs/DVDs I just want them in nice enough condition that they aren't scratched.

6. Music instruments: This one I don't expect to ever receive, but I'm wishing anyway. Should you come across a spare musical instrument, I can put it to good use. Either by playing it myself (pretty much anything stringed I'm good with) or by giving it to someone else who can't afford an instrument but who has talent and desire to play.

7. Code me the program I've dreamed of. This one's just as unlikely as the last, lol. I've learned some programming skills but I don't have the time to learn more, and I would have to be mentored through creating this program specifically anyway, lol. Some years ago I created a 14-page outline of a music player that I would love - and there isn't a single program out there that even comes CLOSE to having the features I want (multi-genre labeling and filtering without interacting with the actual files' tags, for instance). I run Linux Mint as my main OS and would want anything I use to run on Linux natively.

If you're going the route of mailing me directly (such as for wishes #2 or #6, or if you have a personal copy of something on my Amazon wishlist that you want to send), PM me for my address.

I am having a bit of relapse. Maybe I got a bit too energetic yesterday when I was feeling good. Please send all the positive vibes for me tomorrow to make it through my special shift tomorrow. I have a new blouse and new shoes and stuff for my hair and EYELASHES! ha, ha, ha. I'm unstoppable!

I was worried my brain was scrambled today so I did a micro puzzle. It is 150 pieces and 4 x 6 inches total. I was able to do it in one sitting so I think my brain is safe.

So, I finally managed to get around to watch Ncuti Gatwa's second Doctor Who season1, and I think the fact that I actually managed to watch it already says a lot, even if I had to do embroidery while I did it.2

Non-spoilery review: There were parts that I really enjoyed, and which felt more like the Doctor Who that I love than anything in years, but this also had pretty much every single thing that I hated about RTDs first run.
