So, I finally managed to get around to watch Ncuti Gatwa's second Doctor Who season1, and I think the fact that I actually managed to watch it already says a lot, even if I had to do embroidery while I did it.2
Non-spoilery review: There were parts that I really enjoyed, and which felt more like the Doctor Who that I love than anything in years, but this also had pretty much every single thing that I hated about RTDs first run.
1I just realised that I never remembered to write my thoughts about Fifteen's first season. In short, I clearly liked it better than the CHibnall era, considering that I managed to actually watch it, but was quite disappointed by it in general after loving Fifteen in his first appearance. My favourite episode was "73 Yards", but even that felt like two stories squished into one. And I disliked the finale enough that it took me until now to watch the second season.
2Previously on Ruuger watches Doctor Who: I actually took up embroidery as a hobby to force myself to watch Doctor Who during Chibnall era. It did not work.
One of the few challenges that wasn't part of the round 100 free-for-all was the Mystery Box challenge, so we'll rectify that now. Welcome to our second Mystery Box challenge!
I created seven different themed boxes, and since I didn't manage to limit myself, they're actually kind of huge... Each contains 30-40 textures and color palettes with one predominant color. You can choose from:
purple
red
orange
yellow
green
blue
black/white
You can also request a random box, then I'll choose one for you.
There's a comment thread where you can leave a comment to request a box. I will send you the download link for your box as a dm.
Note: I also need a box, and when I was assembling them, one in particular seemed like it would be very challenging for me personally, so that's the one I'll pick.
Special rules for this activity: * You have to use at least one of the provided textures OR a palette for every icon you make * You don't have to use all of the provided materials - if you want, you can make all your icons with the same texture * It would be nice if you mentioned which resource you used for each icon, but it's not absolutely required (the maker name is enough for me to identify it and link it in the result post - you dont have to link it yourself)
The usual rules: * You can make as many icons as you like (if you need a goal, five is a good number :)) * There is no minimum, 1 icon is enough to enter this activity * Please submit your icons (and URLs!) to this post, all in one comment (if possible) * Everyone can participate, you don't have to be a member of this community
* I will collect all the icons from the comments and make a result post * Everyone can leave comments on this post and the activity result posts * There is no voting

Exploring Scottish Catholicism: Education, Philosophy and Literature (University of Glasgow) It was interesting to see some of the contribution Catholicism had made, but with only one week per subject this really was a very quick look at the three topics.
The Forbidden City and its People (University of Stirling and Palace Museum) The forbidden city has a lot of interesting artefacts, and was the centre of government for both the Ming and Qing dynasties, with many notable emperors during that time. But somehow the course seemed to be mostly a series of pictures, and a confusing list of emperors, and more something simply to be looked at.
OpenLearn
Intermediate German: Understanding Spoken German The German level was above what I am capable of, although I could understand some of what was said. But much of the vocabulary is not relevant to my needs - there was a lot of sport, which isn't one of my interests.
Understanding Dyslexia This was another 8 week badged course. The first four weeks were very interesting, the second four less so, as they seemed to be extended simply to qualify as an 8 week course. I passed the test, so earned my badge!
In total this year I have completed 18 FutureLearn courses and 47 OpenLearn courses. The latter is a reflection on my intention of reducing the number of courses on my wish list, and I was successful in completing everything I had at the beginning of the week. Looking forward, I am partway through one FutureLearn course, being on week 2 of a 5 week course. And I have 5 courses recently added to my OpenLearn wish list, which I shall be starting in the new year. I shall also be continuing my German.
Title: Contributing Factors Recipient: happyeverafter72 Author: REDACTED Verse: Granada TV Show Characters/Pairings: Holmes & Watson Rating: T Warnings: N/A Summary: Returning home from a case to find chilly winter weather, Holmes contemplates recent changes to his life, as well as their effects.
After its start in late 2012, the fandom may have grown in popularity due to the films’ parallels. The main crossover cast is often called “The Big Four”, while characters from other animated movies—such as Hotel Transylvania, The Lorax, and Frozen—occasionally join them.
The Big Four have no canonical interactions as a group. Still, that hasn’t hindered the manips and other fanworks that bring them together. They are frequently depicted as Guardians of Childhood and seasonal spirits, taking from Jack Frost’s canonical role as a winter spirit and Guardian of Fun in Rise of the Guardians. Prevalent ships include Jack Frost/Rapunzel, Merida/Hiccup, and more recently, Hiccup/Jack Frost. Although the fandom peaked in popularity around the mid-2010s, it continues to host new activity and fanworks.

Hello everyone, I hope December is treating you all well so far ^^
Below is my second rec post as part of rec_cember, and this time it's all podfics! Thank you for taking a look :)
Fandoms with recs: Star Trek: TNG (Movies and TV), Independence Day (Movies), What We Do in the Shadows (TV), Severance, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, Jennifer's Body
I hit Price Chopper, the Bakery, and Agway while I was downtown. I got GCs from Marshall’s (Price Chopper was out, so no points *sad face*), the local diner and a local pizza place, as well. (I also picked up a BK GC for Addy, which I hope she's tickled with.)
I visited mom, did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for a couple walks with Pip and the dogs, scooped kitty litter, and showered. I put a chuck roast in the crock pot before I left the house this morning. (If the crock pot is the greatest invention ever, the bags that go inside the crock pot have to be the second best. I love them! They make clean-up so much easier.)
I typed in my second fandomtrees fic, gave it a re-read and edit, then got it coded and posted to AO3!! I’m very excited. I’d like to write one more; two if I have the time (and mental energy). I stopped in to see my used bookstore friends because I still had to drop off their card. We had a nice chat. AND I watched another ep of The Pitt. Secrets of the Zoo was my evening background tv.
Temps started out at 53.1(F) and pretty much started dropping from there. It was 39 at noon. We certainly had the expected rain in the morning. At one point it was coming down hard AND the wind was blowing it horizontal. I got soaked walking into Agway. The rain turned to snow about noon, then stopped altogether about an hour later. But there’s more in the forecast, just not any accumulation, which I appreciate.
I thought the warmer temps and rain would get rid of all the snow/ice left, but it did not. The ‘ice’ is currently slushy so easy to walk on because it gives, but once the temps drop it’s going to be slick. Thank goodness for my Yaktrax!
Title: And Bid the Day Begin Recipient: RandomQ / Randomquadballpun Author: REDACTED Verse: Granada TV Show Characters/Pairings: Holmes & Watson Rating: T Warnings: N/A Summary: After a long, taxing case involving sabotage to London’s weather, Holmes and Watson return home to enjoy a well-deserved rest and a little medical care.
2017, will I even have THREE? Maybe. My son might have gotten me to watch movies.
huh, five total, only one of which was fully his fault.
~Wonder Woman - This is where I admit I was more in it for Nielson and Wright than anything else. Decent movie.
~Thor: Ragnarok - Son's fault, Cate might have drawn me in. Fun enough, and Tessa wowed me.
~Coco - Possibly second favorite film of the year. I really appreciated getting to see this concept come to life. Dear movie makers, give me MORE cultural fests!
~The Shape of Water - All my choice, so glad I did, yes I read the book, I think the movie lands better.
~Star Wars: The Last Jedi - And this is when my, at the time, 40 year streak of watching SW in the theater ended completely. I'd seen things from people I trusted that this was not a movie I wished to spend that much money on. Did eventually get the DVD and watch it, and ... well. I still haven't bought the next one in the trilogy or watched more than a few excerpts.
I am feeling much better this afternoon. Yesterday I was miserable. This morning I was still not great, but every hour seemed to return me a little more to the living.
I made too many cards! Here are two that didn't make it into circulation this year.
